So these racists were fine with the couple as members of the congregation, but not with them being married in the church? (Perhaps they thought they were someone’s servants?)
Of course the real kicker to me here is everyone acting shocked over a Baptist church displaying bigotry. I’ll admit it’s different to see them being bigoted towards someone other LGBTQ people, but it’s really just a return to their foundation.
(Please note that I grew up in a Baptist church until I escaped at the age of 18. Needless to say, the teaching didn’t take! I can recall numerous examples of racism on the part of the congregation. While this is, of course, from an individual church, I suspect it was the usual situation for most of the other Baptist churches in the south at the time.)
